Starting a business in Estonia with an Estonian e-Resident card

A company can be registered in Estonia remotely using the e-Resident card (no need to travel). Having an e-Resident card, a legal address and a contact person in Estonia is necessary to set up a business in Estonia.

E-RESIDENCE IN ESTONIA

Estonia is a small country in Northern Europe and one of the smallest members of the European Union, Eurozone, NATO, OECD and Schengen, with just 1.3 million inhabitants today.

Despite this, Estonia dominates the field of digital control and was the founder of Digital 5 (D5). A new concept called e-Residency was introduced in Estonia in December 2014. Freelancers, business owners, international partners and other non-residents connected to Estonia benefit from the e-Residency program, primarily to make life and business easier. Starting a business, expanding your business, making investments or studying in the European Union is possible with e-Residency in Estonia.

STARTING A BUSINESS WITH AN ELECTRONIC RESIDENCE CARD

WHAT IS ELECTRONIC RESIDENCY?

E-Residency is a state-issued digital identity and paperless business environment that enables citizens to access Estonian e-government services. Estonian citizens who do not live permanently in the country and who wish to access the country’s and the EU’s e-services can obtain an e-Residency from the Estonian government.

Various ministries and institutions participate in the e-residency program, which was set up as a national initiative. The greatest advantage of being an e-resident is that they can access electronic services throughout the EU without restriction, due to the fact that Estonia is a member of the European Union.

As a physical identity card, the e-Resident ID not only does not confer Estonian citizenship, but also does not grant entry to the EU to its holder.

A digital entrepreneur can set up and run an Estonian company, in the EU, from anywhere in the world with an Estonian e-Resident.

More than 94,000 people from over 170 countries had applied for e-Residency by October 2022, creating over 22,000 Estonian startups. e-Residency kits are personally delivered to applicants after the remote application has been submitted, on payment of a state fee of 265 EUR. Obtaining an e-Resident card is one of the services we offer our customers.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is the e-Resident card valid for travel/residence in the EU?

Unfortunately, no. Unless you are a citizen of the European Union, traveling to Estonia or within the EU requires a visa. E-Residency cards cannot be used as travel visas, as they do not contain photos. E-Residency is not a replacement or a means of working or staying in Estonia or the EU.

Could you please let me know when I will receive my E-Residency card? Can anyone collect my card on my behalf?

As a general rule, the whole process from application to collection of the e-Resident card takes 4-6 weeks, and only the applicant can collect it. Alternatively, you can find the Estonian embassy or consulate in your country. On receipt of your card, you will need to collect it within six months. A fingerprint will be required for authentication and verification of your identity in order to receive your electronic residence card. Neither the Estonian embassy nor consulate can provide an e-residency kit to anyone other than the individual concerned.

Is it necessary for an e-resident to pay taxes in Estonia?

No, it is not necessary. You are not a tax resident of Estonia simply because you have an e-residency. If you are a tax resident in a country, you must pay taxes there, regardless of your e-resident status. Understanding the difference between e-Residency and Estonian residency is essential. Unlike e-residency, Estonian residency is a physical status with obligations and benefits.

*Non-tax residents pay taxes in their country of tax residence. In the absence of economic substance in Estonia, an Estonian company owned by a non-tax resident in Estonia will either be taxed twice, or taxed in the country of tax residence of the owner of the Estonian company. We will provide you with the link to apply for an Estonian e-residency card. Domiciliation surcharge €41 + VAT/month payable annually.

As an option, on request and subject to quotation, we can help you create the economic substance of your company (location, materialization, recruitment, organization, development).

*The registration of a bank account* by a third party is illegal, even with a power of attorney; we invite you to be wary of sites offering to open a bank account* for you.
